A passion fruit mule is a sunny twist on the classic Moscow mule. The drink keeps the familiar mix of vodka, lime, and ginger beer, then adds passion fruit for a tart, fragrant layer.
You can make it with fresh passion fruit pulp, frozen pulp, or unsweetened passion fruit puree. The seeds are edible, but you can strain the pulp if you want a smoother drink.
Serve it in copper mugs if you have them, or use any sturdy glass filled with ice. The main thing is to keep the ginger beer very cold and add it last so the drink stays fizzy.
01What you'll need
Ingredients
6 items · 2 cocktails
- 2 ounces passion fruit pulp or unsweetened passion fruit puree, thawed if frozen
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 2 teaspoons superfine sugar
- 3 ounces vodka
- Ice cubes, for serving
- 8 ounces chilled nonalcoholic ginger beer
02How to make it
Step-by-step
1. Chill the mugs
Place 2 copper mugs or highball glasses in the freezer for 5 minutes if you have time. This quick chill helps the drink stay cold without watering down too fast.
2. Mix the tart base
Add the passion fruit pulp, lime juice, and superfine sugar to a small measuring cup or cocktail shaker. Stir well until the sugar mostly dissolves and the mixture no longer looks grainy.
3. Add the vodka
Pour in the vodka and stir again. If using a cocktail shaker, add a small handful of ice and shake for about 10 seconds to chill the mixture.
4. Fill the glasses
Fill the chilled mugs or glasses with ice cubes. Use enough ice to come close to the top; a full glass keeps the mule colder.
5. Divide the mixture
Pour the passion fruit and vodka mixture evenly over the ice in the 2 glasses. If you do not like passion fruit seeds, pour it through a small strainer as you divide it.
6. Top with ginger beer
Slowly pour 4 ounces chilled ginger beer into each glass. Pouring slowly keeps the fizz from foaming over.
7. Stir and serve
Give each drink one gentle stir from the bottom to combine. Serve right away while the ginger beer is bubbly.

Cook's tips
- Make-ahead: Stir together the passion fruit, lime juice, sugar, and vodka up to 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Add ice and ginger beer just before serving.
- Storage: Once mixed with ginger beer, this drink is best served right away. Leftovers will lose their bubbles in the fridge.
- Passion fruit swap: If you cannot find passion fruit pulp, use unsweetened passion fruit puree or nectar. If using sweetened nectar, skip the sugar at first, then taste before adding more.
- Ginger beer choice: Some brands are very sweet and mild, while others are sharp and spicy. Use one you enjoy drinking on its own.
- Nonalcoholic version: Replace the vodka with cold sparkling water or more ginger beer. Add an extra squeeze of lime if the drink tastes too sweet.
- Less sweet option: Use 1 teaspoon sugar total, or skip it if your ginger beer or passion fruit product is already sweetened.
Cook's note
Superfine sugar dissolves faster than regular granulated sugar in cold drinks. If you only have regular sugar, stir a little longer or use 1/2 ounce simple syrup instead of the 2 teaspoons sugar.
04Frequently asked
Questions & answers
Can I use fresh passion fruit?
Yes. Scoop out the pulp and seeds, then measure 2 ounces for this recipe. Leave the seeds in for texture, or strain the pulp through a fine-mesh strainer for a smoother cocktail.
Do I need a copper mug for a mule?
No. Copper mugs are traditional and keep the drink cold, but a rocks glass or highball glass works well. Fill it with plenty of ice.
Is ginger beer alcoholic?
Most ginger beer sold for cocktails is nonalcoholic, but labels vary. Check the bottle if you are avoiding alcohol or serving a zero-proof version.
Can I make a pitcher for a party?
Yes. Multiply the passion fruit, lime, sugar, and vodka by the number of servings and chill that mixture in a pitcher. Add ice to glasses and top each drink with ginger beer when serving so the bubbles stay fresh.
